16+ Department Students join the recently refurbished 16+ Department in Year 12 and may stay until they reach the age of nineteen; they are offered a programme within which personal and social skills can be developed, allowing for individual styles of learning. There are a number of nationally accredited programmes which are offered, including the Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network (A.S.D.A.N), Towards Independence, Youth Award Scheme, Life Skills and Basic Skills programmes. The English Speaking Board programme is also offered. Each student has their own programme with elements from some or all of the above programmes. The students all have their own individual learning programme and are supported to choose what they would like to study. They are also supported by tutors within the tutorial system. Students are encouraged to prepare for adult life after Chailey Heritage School through experiencing extended education at a College of Further Education as well as making visits to a variety of future placement options and places of interest in the local community; for example, leisure centres, libraries, supermarkets and garden centres. We have three school buses (especially adapted to our specifications) which enable the pupils to have off-site visits which may be allied to mobility training, work/college experience or life skills development. “Effectiveness and efficiency of the sixth form are outstanding. This is due to the very high quality input and co-ordination between therapists, teachers, key workers, support assistants, residential staff and external partnerships. The school increasingly gives post-16 learners greater opportunity to make their own choices and decisions …” (Ofsted Report - May 2007) "Good leadership and management ensure that students follow a good curriculum…… It is well matched to students’ ages, capabilities and individual interests. It also offers choice......Students learn key literacy, numeracy and ICT skills alongside classmates of similar ability ….. in the afternoon they choose options that include music, art, cookery and yoga."
