Pre School and Primary Department
There are three classes in the Pre School and Primary Department which are located in the Primary Department building (built in 2005).
Pre School caters for children aged between 2 and 5 years old. The younger children attend part-time, gradually building up to five days by their 5th birthday. All the children have a physical disability, mainly cerebral palsy, and associated disabilities such as: · Non-verbal · Epilepsy · Feeding difficulties · Sensory difficulties, visual impairment, auditory and dual sensory impairment
Assessments of the children are undertaken by a multidisciplinary team over a prolonged period of time. This enables the parents and team to build up as complete a picture as possible of a child’s needs and requirements. Many children move on to the Primary Department, but not all. We are always very clear if we feel a child’s needs could be met elsewhere. The children are offered an Early Years’ Curriculum in which they participate in a wide range of nursery activities. Work is undertaken individually or in small groups. Each child has a programme devised by the team and co-ordinated by the teacher, with a great emphasis on play. Much of the work is focused on developing self-confidence and an effective communication system for each child. When a child reaches the statutory school age they may join the Primary Department or move to another school which has been identified as more able to meet their needs. For some children, a dual placement with another school, usually their local Primary school, is arranged.
Primary caters for pupils aged between 5 and 11 (Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2). Children are taught in small class groups each staffed by a qualified teacher and at least two full time classroom assistants. Most lessons are taught by a class teacher, however, music is taught by a specialist. Therapists take part in and lead PE sessions. The latest information and communication technology and appropriate software is available in every classroom. The curriculum is based upon the National Curriculum and is modified according to pupils’ needs. All subjects are covered but there is an emphasis on the core areas, English, Mathematics, Science and ICT, and more specifically on the development of literacy and numeracy skills. Central to the curriculum is the area of Personal and Social Education and Citizenship and pupils are encouraged to develop their personal, social and independence skills.
In Year 6, preparations are made for the change to the Secondary Department. Staff and pupils in Secondary maintain close links in order to ensure that transition takes place as smoothly as possible.
“Achievement in the Foundation Stage is outstanding……All work in the Foundation Stage is exceptional. Here all staff have a shared vision to ensure that the learners are consistently challenged and supported so that they reach their potential in all areas of learning and development ..” (Ofsted Report - May 2007)
"Children get off to a flying start in the Early Years Foundation Stage…… a very lively and buzzing environment soon gets them moving forward. They make rapid gains in learning important communication skills and in their physical development." (Ofsted Report - September 2009)
