Communication |

At Chailey Heritage School we believe that every child has the right to reach their communicative potential. We nurture and support pupils to equip them with the essential life skills to take them through childhood, into adult life and beyond to a wider community. Communication is one of these essential skills. All forms of communication are highly valued. Children are encouraged to use vocalisations, speech, gestures, facial expression, body language and other forms of natural communication. It is recognised that for children to develop their understanding and expressive skills it is necessary to use more structured systems. The majority of pupils at Chailey Heritage School are non-verbal and all have speech and language needs. To support communication, a variety of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems are used. School staff work closely with the Speech and Language Therapists to select and develop systems to meet individual needs. Click on the tabs to the left to read about the AAC systems in use to meet current needs.
