VOCAs incorporate a wide range of electronic communication devices ranging from simple single message devices such as BIGmacks to more complex aids such as Dynavox computers. The multi-disciplinary team, including school staff, occupational therapists and speech and language therapists, work together to maximise the appropriate use of communication technology across the school. Individual pupil’s access needs and their developmental ‘readiness’ for VOCA are monitored and regularly reviewed. Where appropriate, pupils are given the opportunity to learn to use high-tech VOCAs with school staff and specialist Speech and Language Therapists. The school has a number of VOCAs available for assessment use.
