Speech and Language Therapists work together with school staff to make the best use of communication technology. Where appropriate, pupils are given the opportunity to learn to use high-tech VOCAs.
These electronic communication devices range from simple single message devices, such as BIGmacks, to more high tech aids such as Dynavox, Tellus and C12 computers. These devices are accessed in a variety of ways including direct access, switches, and eye gaze technology. The team work with the Occupational Therapists to establish the most reliable access methods for a pupil.
The needs of an individual pupil and their developmental ‘readiness’ for VOCA are monitored and regularly reviewed. The school has access to a range of VOCAs available for assessment use. Additional funding is required for those pupils who need their own VOCA.
