The Every Child Matters Governments vision for Children’s Services was published in 2003. It proposed reshaping Children’s Services to help achieve the outcomes children and young people identified as being key to their well-being in childhood and later life: · Being Healthy · Staying Safe · Enjoying and Achieving · Making a Positive Contribution · Achieving Economic Well-Being All pupils at Chailey Heritage have in place ECM Progress Files where progress is recorded against the 5 Every Child Matters outcomes. The school identifies areas of focus under the 5 outcomes which are appraised and reviewed termly. The outcomes from the appraisal and review enable the school leadership team to identify progress made and priorities for development against each of the five outcomes. ![]()
Chailey Heritage School recently linked up with Whizz Kids and ran a pilot wheelchair skills course on site here at school during the Summer Term 2011. The course was a huge success and many of the children enjoyed attending each week working towards their own individual wheelchair skills goals. The course took place over 3 weeks (every Tuesday and Thursday) and was led by 2 active wheelchair users from Whizz Kids (Trish and Luke). Trish and Luke were not only excellent role models and able to demonstrate in their wheelchairs as well as describe the skills but also fantastic at making learning wheelchair skills fun. Each week the pupils would start with a game of dodge ball, which quickly became very a popular activity. The programme looked at a different topic each week and combined discussion with activity. The topics included: wheelchair aware, passing objects and asking for help, moving through doorways / narrow spaces, moving outside and exploring the environment. The programme proved highly successful and the plan is for Whizz Kids to return next year to deliver a similar programme for various pupils across the school. Trish and Luke also encouraged the pupils to become Whizz Kids Ambassadors.Whizz Kids is a UK based charity who provide a number of services for children with disabilities. They supply children with powered and lightweight manual wheelchairs, specialist trikes, and other vital mobility equipment. A number of our pupils have been lucky enough to receive a wheelchair or equipment from Whizz Kids in the past. Whizz-Kidz believes that a vital part of providing disabled children with mobility equipment is making sure they know how to use it and use it safely and have created a unique wheelchair training programme across the UK, which teaches young disabled people the vital skills they need to be in control of their wheelchair. The wheelchair training scheme helps young wheelchair users get the most from their mobility equipment by improving their wheelchair skills and confidence. Knowing how to use their wheelchairs not only ensures that they are safe, but it also means they can be more independent and have twice as much fun. For further information on all of the services that Whizz Kids offer please see their website: www.whizz-kidz.org.uk
"The pupils’ impressive academic progress is matched by their development as young people. Their personal outcomes are outstanding, whether it is in their growing awareness of how to maintain a safe and healthy lifestyle or their expertise in travelling safely and independently in a wheelchair.......Pupils’ achievements are outstanding….. Their rate of learning proceeds at such a cracking pace that they make outstanding progress. A major reason for this is that pupils are extremely well taught and learning is supported by high quality resources." (Ofsted Report - September 2009)
