Our Innovative CHILD Curriculum
Our innovative Chailey Heritage Individual Learner Driven (CHILD) Curriculum was created to accommodate each individual’s learning needs.
The CHILD Curriculum is designed to help pupils with:
- Communication
- Physical activity
- Accessing technology
- Social and emotional well-being
- Engagement and sensory support
- Functional skills
- Specific Learning
We also have a busy calendar of school events from Harvest Festival celebrations to our end-of-year Celebration Day. We’re proud to provide our pupils with lots of sensory sessions based around national holidays such as Easter and Christmas to celebrations like Diwali, ensuring every session is an opportunity for our pupils to learn and engage with the world around them.
Supported by teams of Teachers and Education Assistants, pupils are encouraged to make seasonal gifts and take part in workshops with local groups such as drama and music, or go on school trips.
Empowering young people to make choices
Working closely alongside Speech and Language Therapists, we develop a wide variety of Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) approaches to meet personal needs. These range from subtle body language and sensory cues to advanced communication technologies.
Specialist techniques and resources include:
- Bespoke sensory cues including objects of reference and touch cues
- Chailey Communication System
- VOCAs (Voice Output Communication Aids)
- Eye-Gaze technology
- Staff are trained in Makaton, and BSL where appropriate
Let’s Get Physical
All pupils at Chailey Heritage Foundation have the opportunity to take part in our extensive physical programme as part of their curriculum. Activities include:
- Rebound therapy
- Hippotherapy
- Aquatics
- Games
- Use of trikes, walkers and standers
- Use of the innowalk
Relationships and Sex Education Provision
We’re experts at delivering relationships and sex education training for pupils with complex needs.
As well as our in-house training for staff, we also speak at conferences on the subject and deliver training nationally to many schools and other organisations. ‘The Sex Factor’ (link to Sex Factor page) was developed and launched as an online service by our award-winning specialist teacher.
We teach our pupils how to stay safe, and what is and is not acceptable behaviour from others, through innovative, creative and well-researched methods. We also share and develop our practice with parents.
